Anagallis monellii 'Blue Pimpernel'

(April 29, 2010) Anagallis monellii is an excellent trailing flower for large containers (here I have it sharing a pot with an Iceberg Rose). It has a mounding habit and grows to be about 20" wide by 9" tall. 'Blue Pimpernel' has deep blue little flowers with red and yellow centers.

The Blue Pimpernel has produced a few minor problems. I tried two flowers in another planter and they only produced a few straggly branches. Also, the ones in the first container took up a larger area than I planned (many of the branches reached 3' in length) and drowned out several of the flowers in front of the planter. I've decided that I need to keep the flower trimmed pretty regularly to keep it compact.

(July 13, 2010) The picture to the right is the Blue Pimpernel a month after I cut it back. Frankly, I like this size better. It still makes a nice impression without overwhelming the nearby plants.
