Campanula latifolia “Blue” or “Great Bellflower’
Campanula latifolia “Blue” or “Great Bellflower’ is one of those “Wow” plants with striking dark purple blooms that grab your attention. It probably should be planted as a backdrop to a assortment of plants, but I decided to showcase it in a prominent planter by the garden gate. I have watched people walk by the garden and casually glance at the flowers. And when they see the Campanula they just stop and stare. The blooms, for all their enormity and delicacy, are long lasting.
The one problem I have experienced is that the stalks are not strong enough to easily bear the weight of the flowers and tend to droop. I have tried staking with some success, but in a strong wind the top of the stalk that is unstaked has a tendency to snap. So I’ll probably have to find a more protected area.
